Labour dispute at Babylon Cinema, Berlin-Mitte

The workers of Babylon Cinema in Berlin-Mitte get a very poor wage even though the cinema is mainly financed by the municipality. The cinema likes to polish its image with films of social contents. But employees who ask for more rights or the ones who have founded a shop council get pressured by the management, or even dismissed.

The student employees earn between 5,50 EUR and 6,40 EUR (net) per hour. Supposedly the minimum wage for this sector. Contracts are not put into writing. This way, whoever asks for a payrise, for a leave or for salaries during sick leave, can be swiftly replaced.

Timothy Grossman, the cinema boss, was not available for an interview.
