        Occupy Nigeria

"Nigeria will never be the same again..."

When the Nigerian government decided in January 2012 to remove fuel subsidies and, by doing so, to increase the price of petrol by 120%, a huge protest movement started, as well as a general strike that lasted 8 days. There were demonstrations in more than 50 towns and millions of people participated. Roads and squares were also occupied.

President Goodluck Jonathan said he wanted to remove the fuel subsidies to invest more in infrastructures. - In the past - and there have been already 22 fuel price increases since 1988 - the additional state revenues created did not end up being used for development projects.

During the protests,  at least 10 people were shot dead by the Nigerian police.
